MARIO ZANARIA
Where are you from? Where do you live?
I am from Milan and I still leave here.
How old are you?
40 (damn).
How do you pay your bills? Are you working as a professional photographer?
I am actually halfway, let’s say that for the moment photography allows me to pay for the equipment.
What cameras do you use?
Nothing too fancy: digital Canon and Leica and some analog medium format when I feel particularly romantic.
Any photographer or artist inspiring you?
Oh, so many!
I find inspiration in many people for different aspects, which can go from the technical solutions they adopt, to the approach to people, to the vision, to any other aspect related to photography.
My favorite photographer today is Toni Thorimbert: I love his approach, so natural, consistent, true. He is really the kind of photographer I would like to be.
There are many other who I like, from the great classics (Penn, Avedon, Bailey, etc) to more modern ones (Anders Petersen, Corinne Day, Chico Bialas), to more contemporary photographers (Evgenia Arbugaeva, Aeric Meredith-Goujon, Dan Winters, Iain McKell, Rineke Dijkstra, Anton Corbijn, Pasquale Salerno)… I guess this list could go on forever.
If we talk about influences I am afraid I am not that original: they mainly come from the classics (like Cartier Bresson, Sieff, Avedon, Newton, just to name a few) whose books I have started reading since I was 14 or so.
What/who do you enjoy to shoot the most?
People. Especially when they are willing to play and really show them.
Ok, I admit I have a weakness for women, I love to dig with photography in the mystery I see in them.
Do you believe in god?
No.
What do you drink on a night out?
Beer.
Do you like dancing?
Very much, even if I move like a bear. I really feel like the character of Moretti’s movie “Caro Diario”.
What’s your favorite first name?
Rocco, I guess.
Are you a fashion addicted?
No.
What’s your favorite tv series?
I don’t have a TV, so I don’t watch any. But I loved the Simpsons very much and I still watch them on the computer when I can: it’s pure genius!
Recommend us a book.
A million little pieces by James Frey.
What’s the country of your dreams?
It would be Italy if we could have more respect towards each other and think a little more about the community and a little less about ourselves.
Have you ever been to Iceland?
Never but I would like to go.
What song would you choose for a slideshow of your work?
I enjoy so much music that it is a very difficult choice. I would really like very much choosing “Here comes the sun” (Beatles). I would probably have to start shooting something consistent, though.
Ask yourself a question. Tell me your answer (like Marzullo does)
Why do you like photography that much?
I like it because pictures never lie.
When you look at photographs of somebody you can clearly see who the person behind is and what he is trying to make you think.
Is he being sincere? Is he looking for something inside himself? is he looking for an applause? is he bluffing?
Every answer is in the pictures.
I really think this is magic!
