“Last year I wandered around Los Angeles for three months and I shoot a series of pictures. I decided to name this series ‘california.jpg’ because this is nothing more than my experience there: time spent sometimes in good company, often alone, sometimes lucid, sometimes broken. California was amazing”.
“With cities, it is as with dreams: everything imaginable can be dreamed, but even the most unexpected dream is a rebus that conceals a desire or, its reverse, a fear. Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”
― Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
Jonathan Santoro‘s project is a minimal and well edited body of work. You cannot understand where you are, it can be everywhere in the world, and actually it doesn’t matter at all. Because what you get from these pictures are sensations, details, moods that Jonathan decided to capture and share.
I am very curious to see more, I hope there will be more after another journey.
Jonathan Santoro is an Italian photographer living in Milan, after studying photography in Rome. He is also a collaborator at Circus Studios and part of a photo collective, Collettivo Domino, where the focus is on reportage.
